Gustave Courbet

Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet was a French painter born on the 10th of June 1819 and died on the 31st of December 1877. Courbet was one of the artist who led the Realism art movement during the 19th century. Courbet rejected Romanticism, and wanted to paint real pople, and things that he could see infront of him. He started off the movement of Realism, which many artist soon followed after him. His work is very gloomy, only using a dark colour pallet in his work. His work portrays less nature, and focuses more on people in a variation of locations.

Jules Breton

Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton was born on the 1st of May 1827 and died on the 5th of July 1906, and was a 19th-century french Realist painted. His work largely displays traditional French people in a countryside settings. His work blends traditional painting styles, with the more modern Realism art style, focusing on real issues and problems in rural France during this time.  Some of his work does include some bright areas, unlike some Realist painters who mainly use neutral colours, however this  often juxtapositioned with darker, more subdue colours within the painting.

Jean-François Millet

Jean-François Millet was born on the 4th of October, 1814 , and died on  the 20th of January 1875. Millet was a French painter, and often portraid scenes of poor pesent farmers and workers in France. His work is usually classed as part of the Realism art movement. As in the style of the Realism movement, his work is very real and raw, showing all aspects of life, especially the hard and gritty areas of life being a poor worker. He uses a very neutral, subtle colour pallet, representing a dull, hard time.

Realism

Realism was an artistic movement that began in France in the 1850s, after the 1848 Revolution. Realist created a new type of art, going against exaggerated emotionalism that comes from romanticism. They sought to create more accurate, truthful images portraying real people and their lives through their work.  The work often shows people of all classes in real life situations, including unpleasant aspects of peoples lives.

 

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was born on the 6 May 1880 was a German expressionist painter and print maker. Kirchner was one of the founders of the artists group Die Bruke, who were one of the main groups leading to expressionism in 20th-century art. His work was branded then classed as "degenerate" in 1933 " by the Nazis. After this, in 1937 over 600 of his works were sold or destroyed. His work often conveys different emotions and issues, and often portrays naked woman. He uses bright colours and shapes within his work, usually in the background.  

 

Franz Marc

Franz Marc was born in 1880 and was a German painter and print maker. Marc was one of the main figures of the German Expressionist movement. As well as paintings, Marc often used printing to create images, such as prints in woodcut and lithography. A large majority of his work portrays animals, usually in their natural settings. What really strikes me about his work, is his use of primary pallet, creating vivid and energetic pieces of art.
